Welcome to the Historical Museum at Lund University! The museum was founded in its present form in 1805 and has one of the country's largest archaeological collections. These collections contain objects from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times. In addition to this, we have anatomical, ethnographic, and ecclesiastical collections.

Treasures from Five Continents

The Historical Museum was founded in 1805, but its collection of ethnographic and cultural-historical objects is much older. The collection was concluded around the turn of the 20th century, when the museum shifted its focus primarily to archaeological finds from the region of Skåne.

Medieval church art

The collection of medieval ecclesiastical art occupies a large part of the museum’s premises. During the 19th century, many of Scania’s medieval churches were demolished, and in the early 20th century many of the artworks were entrusted to the care of the Historical Museum. Today, the collection provides a unique picture of medieval art in Scania.

Liturgical objects

A unique collection of medieval liturgical objects as well as personal belongings with religious motifs are displayed on the third floor of The Historical Museum. The objects are described in the catalogue “Heliga föremål” (Sacred Objects), which is available for purchase at the museum's entrance.

Malmströms collection

The Malmström Collection was donated by the artist and sculptor Henning Malmström to the then Classical Antiquities Museum at Lund University in 1968. Some of the sculptures are likely forgeries, while others are clearly genuine. The collection is currently not on display at the Historical Museum.

Iron age

A collection of assorted Iron Age finds from Scania. Some of the objects display exceptionally high craftsmanship with few known parallels, while others are more common. A selection of the objects will be presented in the new Iron Age exhibition opening this autumn.
